Description

Poitiers is an active City where sports are a large part of daily life. The city is ideally located one hour and fifteen minutes away from Paris, one hour from Bordeaux and an hour and twenty minutes from the ocean. Poitiers is connected to the motorway, the TGV (high-speed train), the LGV (high-speed line) and Poitiers-Biard airport. Poitiers is also the Prefecture of La Vienne region, with 88,291 inhabitants and is engaged in an economic, touristic, social and sporting approach.   The Urban Community of Greater Poitiers (combining 40 municipalities) connects a major University City with some neighbouring municipalities and some rural territories. Famous for the top-quality life it provides, Grand Poitiers is the 4th-largest urban centre in Nouvelle Aquitaine. This relevant complementarity provides a wide range of diverse sports settings (gymnasiums, stadiums, specialized sports halls, hiking trails, swimming pools with one Nordic pool, a skating-rink, etc.). The Urban Community of Greater Poitiers concentrates major assets, thanks toits Roman heritage, its wide-ranging cultural institutions combined with facilities and events focused on the future (such as the Futuroscope). The long-term sporting connection held by Poitiers and its urban community is significant and essential. Not only do sports contribute to the inhabitants’ welfare but they are also a way to promote social diversity and inclusion. We always seek for balance in the many sporting activities: competitive sports for amateurs, competitive sports for professionals (volleyball, basketball, women’s cycling), leisure sports, sports for one and all, but also self-organized sporting events and international sporting events (Tour de France, Poitiers Marathon, the Futuroscope, etc.). The environmental quality is also a definite asset for well-being in Poitiers. The city is sprinkled with landscaped green areas, and the different municipalities within the Urban Community are connected through environment-friendly routes, whilst soft mobility growth also contribute to Poitiers’well-being.
