Description

Serre Chevalier Vallée Briançon is THE mountain and climbing destination in the north of the Hautes-Alpes, a fabulous, 1,200 m playground at nearly 4,000 m in altitude. For more than 30 years, Briançon has been an established venue for the organisation of the Mondial de l’Escalade. In an environment combining sports, nature, and culture with an unobstructed view of the mountains and the Vauban fortifications, the climbing wall backs onto the altitude centre, which is ideal for altitude preparation and training. The complete transformation of this key site will be completed by 2023. In a single place, it features a climbing structure for all three disciplines: lead, bouldering and speed, an accommodation centre, meeting/video rooms, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a weight-training room, a fitness/warm-up room, a football pitch, an athletics track, tennis courts and an ice rink. The villages of Serre Chevalier extend up to the mythical Lautaret and Galibier passes and offer a vast territory for vertical sports of all kinds. Between the high mountains of the Écrins National Park and the Guisane Valley, climbers can find natural sites for high-level climbing (the boulders of Ailefroide and the Entraygues, Fournel and Rocher Maubertare rockfaces are less than 30 minutes from Briançon and the world-renowned spot of Céüse – with more than 400 routes ranging from 5a to 9c – is an hour and a half’s drive away). Varied rocks, multi-pitch routes, boulders, different exposures and altitudes: the training possibilities here are exceptional all year round. Mondial de l'Escalade 2020 - YouTube

Special features

Far from any pollution, physical altitude training takes place in a dry Mediterranean-type climate offering 300 days of sunshine a year. Serre Chevalier Vallée Briançon guarantees a physical training experience at altitudes up to 4,000 m, with a choice of refuges in the heart of the Écrins National Park. All complemented by a naturally warm (44 °C) spring in Monêtier-les-Bains, a spa centre perfectly suited to relaxation and physical recovery with indoor and outdoor pools each measuring 300 m². Serre-Chevalier Briançon has many natural climbing sites to offer in the immediate vicinity, providing plenty of opportunity for outings. The density of high-level routes located less than 30 minutes from Briançon is exceptional (Ailefroide, Entraygues, Le Fournel, Rocher Maubert, etc.).

Possibility to access a complete recovery system, the Recovery Box (RB 360).

Known for

The Mondial de l’Escalade, launched in 1989, has continued to grow while maintaining its original legacy and spirit. From its beginnings in Villeneuve-la-Salle with Jean-Marie Rey to the Berwick Military Barracks and its emblematic organiser Philippe Ligerot, the Mondial has always successfully handled the transitions brought about by the changes in climbing. Since 2018, the new Briançon Sports Park is perfect as the discipline becomes an Olympic sport and undergoes professionalisation.
