Description

The SMART (Sport Movement Ambition Research Technology) platform is a smart sports center combining research, training, innovation and top level sports practice. It boasts two connected and fully-equipped sports halls as well as rooms for physical preparation, dance and fitness, a virtual museum and innovative teaching and seminar spaces. The building with its 3,200m² of floor area will host university, federal and professional sports in association with researchers and industrial actors to better understand the mechanisms of sport performance. It will also boast a research center of 410m² equipped with the latest technology in sport movement analysis (smart cameras, motion capture, force plates, fully equipped race track, exercise machines). The artificial rugby pitches are both category C, measuring 68m wide and 95m long with an in-goal area of 12m and were both finished in September 2020. The two pitches are fully enclosed. The surface is artificial grass (edel grass) of 60mm with a cork infill meeting Rugby World test requirements. The Smart is also connected to the Bellegrave sports complex in Pessac and the athletics stadium in Talence . All three are preparation centres for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. They are located at the heart of the campus, just 20 minutes from Bordeaux Mérignac international airport and 30 minutes from Saint Jean train station (2 hours from Paris). They are also accessible via tram line B (Montaigne/Montesquieu station).

Special features

The SMART and the two rugby pitches are facilities for developing top-level sport at the heart of the University of Bordeaux. The delegations hosted on the university campus as their preparation site will benefit from the support of the 250 students involved in the field of sport expertise and performance optimisation. In addition, a University of Bordeaux health platform, and specifically a sports medecine facility, will be created. The physiotherapy and sports medicine training centres are located near the SMART, offering their expertise and facilitating access for delegations to the University Hospital medical imaging equipment if necessary. The University of Bordeaux is therefore an ideal setting offering delegations support in terms of both sport performance and medecine.

Known for

The Smart will be inaugurated in March 2023 and the rugby pitches were opened in 2020. They are associated with a group of major sporting partners of the University of Bordeaux, including the Union Bègles Bordeaux and Sporting Union Agenais (Top 14 rugby clubs), the Boxers de Bordeaux (first division hockey), the Girondins de Bordeaux soccer club, the JSA BMB (basketball), the federations of athletics, judo, tennis, handball, basketball, rugby, badminton, fencing, handi-sport and table tennis, the Médical Sport Stadium, Cap Sciences and the Choreography Development Centre. These partners are all committed to the facilities because of their capacity for analysing human motricity and more particularly top-level sport performance. The guest delegations will benefit from this expertise and the network of high-level actors using the facility.
